Butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, all-purpose flour, salt, 21-ounce can apple pie filling, brown sugar.
9x9 baking dish, parchment or oil spray Bowls: large, medium, Rubber Spatula, Countertop Mixer, Hand Mixer.
Once you have everything, details follow. Kids & novice bakers can prepare homemade apple pie bars. If they're old enough, they can do it alone. Supervise.
This is a close 30-minute recipe. Preheat the oven to 350°F & prepare a 9x9 baking dish with parchment paper or cooking spray. Our recipe uses metal.
If baking in a glass pan, preheat the oven to 325°F & check for doneness near the end. If using parchment paper, make sure the edges dangle over the pan.
Let's go! We'll start by making the bottom layer of this one-pan dessert. In a large bowl, beat butter & sugar on low speed using a mixer. Beat in the eggs & vanilla. Mix flour and salt in same bowl.
Scrape dough from bowl into prepared pan. Create the bottom crust by pressing the dough evenly into the pan with your fingertips. If you made your own apple combination, add it now.
Whisk brown sugar & flour to make streusel topping. Cut in the butter with a pastry blender or fork until the mixture resembles coarse sand.
You could use a food processor, but I prefer mixing. Evenly sprinkle coarse crumbs over pie filling. Cook for 35 minutes.
When the filling is bubbling & the streusel is golden, the apple pie bars are done. Remove baked bars from oven. Pull the parchment paper up & off the pan to cool. Serve bars.
This dish uses canned apple filling. If you have fresh sliced apples, you can make the apple layer from scratch.
Thinly slice 3 tart apples to use. Apples are tossed with brown sugar, apple pie spice, & vanilla extract.
